Nurturing Curiosity

What’s the Best Age to Start Childcare in Australia?

A thoughtful guide for families navigating this decision

One of the most common questions parents ask is:

“What’s the best age to start childcare?”

The honest answer? There isn’t one “perfect” age. Every child, family and circumstance is different. What matters most isn’t the number of months – it’s whether the environment is nurturing, safe and aligned with your child’s developmental stage.

Here’s what to consider when deciding the right time for your family.

Starting Childcare Before 12 Months

Many Australian families begin childcare between 6-12 months, often due to returning to work.

At this age, children benefit from:

  • Consistent educators
  • Small group sizes
  • Calm, predictable routines
  • Strong communication between home and centre

High-quality early learning environments understand the importance of secure attachments. Babies thrive when they feel safe, seen and responded to with warmth.

If starting before 12 months, look for a centre that prioritises one-on-one connection and gentle transitions.

And if you’re feeling nervous about starting this early, the data is reassuring. Nationally, children in centre-based day care attend for an average of 34.1 hours per week – a clear sign that part-time and full-time arrangements at this age are genuinely common, not the exception. It’s also worth knowing that the main reason Australian children attend formal care is to support parents returning to work, with children of employed single parents and dual-income families the most likely to be in care. You’re not doing anything unusual, you’re in very good company.

Starting Between 1-2 Years

This is one of the most common starting ages.

At this stage, toddlers are:

  • Beginning to develop independence
  • Exploring language
  • Learning social skills
  • Developing emotional regulation

Childcare can support these milestones through play-based learning and guided peer interaction.

It’s also common for separation anxiety to appear during this phase — and that’s completely normal. Experienced educators are skilled at helping toddlers settle gently and confidently.

Starting at 3-4 Years

Some families choose to start closer to kindergarten age.

By this stage, children benefit from:

  • Structured school readiness programs
  • Group-based learning experiences
  • Confidence-building activities
  • Opportunities to build friendships

Starting later doesn’t mean missing out – high-quality programs are designed to meet children where they are developmentally.

This age group is also incredibly well supported nationally. In 2025, 91% of all Australian four-year-olds were enrolled in a preschool program, meaning families starting at this stage are joining the vast majority of Australian families, not the minority.

What Really Matters More Than Age

Instead of focusing solely on age, consider:

  • Your child’s temperament
  • Your family’s routine
  • The quality of the centre
  • Educator consistency
  • The learning philosophy

Research consistently shows that high-quality early learning environments positively impact children’s cognitive, social and emotional development – particularly when relationships are strong.

The key is quality, not just timing.

Signs Your Child Might Be Ready

While there’s no checklist for readiness, some signs include:

  • Curiosity about other children
  • Interest in new environments
  • Ability to manage short separations
  • Emerging communication skills

Even if your child isn’t showing all of these yet, a supportive environment can help nurture them.

Supporting a Smooth Start at Any Age

No matter when you begin childcare, you can support the transition by:

  • Talking positively about the centre
  • Visiting before the first day
  • Keeping drop-offs calm and consistent
  • Building strong communication with educators

Starting childcare is a partnership between families and educators.

A Reassuring Reminder

There is no “too early” or “too late” – only what’s right for your family.

The best age to start childcare is when:

  • You feel confident in the environment
  • Your child is supported emotionally
  • The centre aligns with your values

When children feel safe, they flourish – at any age.
