The wonders of a sensory board for early learning

At Eden Academy, our educators are incredibly passionate about what they do, which means they pour their heart and soul into the learning experiences for the children. At Eden Academy’s sister centre, Kilsyth Early Learning, Educator Kelly Molineux wanted to create a learning experience that the children could enjoy over and over again. Her goal was to create something that would “spark children’s imaginations as they explore different movements and sounds,” and she knew this could be achieved with a sensory board.

She repurposed what she had at home, such as the light, mirror, screws, door handle, beads, elastic and xylophone and secured them onto a timber sheet from Bunnings. “I focus a lot of my teaching on sensory exploration, and enjoy watching the children explore with wonder and joy,” she said.

The nursery children took to it instantly, with their favourite area being the ball drop. Kelly said “they have so much joy on their faces as the ball drops out the other end, makes it all worth while”.

Learning experiences such as this sensory board are incredibly important for children’s development as it encourages children to explore with their curiosity. In doing so, they begin to learn problem-solving, cause and effect and work on building the muscles in their hands through developing fine motor skills.

"My favourite part of my job is being able to be part of the children's learning journey and being able to make a difference. I have so much passion and love for what I do, and I could never picture myself doing anything else." Kelly Molineux

Thank you, Kelly, for your awesome learning ideas and for creating something the children love! Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and we appreciate everything you do for the centre!

Make your own sensory board at home!

If you’re looking for an easy way to engage your child and encourage learning at home, look no further than a DIY sensory board. It’s a simple project that you can do in an afternoon, which will keep your baby entertained time and time again as they discover new ways of interacting with the world around them. A sensory board combines various materials with different uses and interactions to encourage a child to learn how each item operates and responds to their interactions.

The best part is that all of the items you need can be found in your own house! You don’t have to go out and buy anything new—just repurpose what you already have lying around. And if you don’t feel like creating from scratch, there are plenty of tutorials online that will walk you through how to make one for your baby!
